Planning Your EV Road Trip from Reno to Lake Tahoe
Everything you need to know about driving an EV from Reno to Lake Tahoe — range planning, charging stops, and what to do if you run low.
The Reno to Tahoe EV Corridor
The drive from Reno to Lake Tahoe is one of the most popular EV road trips in the West. Whether you're taking I-80 through Truckee or the Mt. Rose Highway (SR 431) to Incline Village, proper planning ensures a stress-free journey.
Route Options and Range Requirements
I-80 via Truckee (45 miles): The most popular route climbs from 4,500 feet in Reno to 7,200 feet at Donner Summit before descending to Truckee (5,800 ft). Expect to use 30-40% more energy than rated range suggests due to elevation gain and cold conditions.
Mt. Rose Highway to Incline Village (35 miles): Shorter but steeper, climbing to 8,900 feet at the summit. This route is especially demanding on EV batteries and is frequently closed during winter storms.
Highway 50 to South Lake Tahoe (60 miles via Carson City): The longest but most gradual route, passing through Carson City. More charging options along the way.
Charging Stops Along the Way
Reno has excellent fast-charging infrastructure at multiple locations. The key challenge is that once you leave Reno, charging options are limited until you reach your destination. The I-80 corridor has a few stops near Boomtown and Verdi, but the mountain section has minimal infrastructure.
The Emergency Plan
Even with careful planning, mountain weather and unexpected detours can leave you short on charge. Save Lake Tahoe Mobile EV Charging in your contacts before every mountain trip. We provide emergency mobile charging across the entire Reno-to-Tahoe corridor, including remote mountain passes and highway shoulders.
